Target is dealing with increasing theft and “organized retail crime” and plans to close nine stores in four states. Even though they increased security staff, hired outside guards, and used tools to prevent theft, the crime problems continued. Here are the areas where stores will close, along with details about the other stores and employee numbers.
New York City: Harlem: 517 E 117th St. (96 stores left, over 20,000 workers)
Seattle: University Way: 4535 University Way NE
Ballard: 1448 NW Market St., Ste. 100 (22 stores left, nearly 4,000 workers)
San Francisco/Oakland:
SF Folsom: 1690 Folsom St.
Oakland Broadway: 2650 Broadway
Pittsburg: 4301 Century Blvd. (32 stores left, over 6,400 workers)
Powell: 3031 SE Powell Blvd.
Hollywood: 4030 NE Halsey St. (15 stores left, more than 2,500 workers)
Over 150 stores are still open in these areas. Target is increasing security by locking certain items and working with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s investigations division. The company said it will continue investing in security but can’t fix the issue alone.
