From Tragedy to Triumph
Ussery’s journey began with a profound personal loss: her husband’s unexpected passing left her and her two children searching for a new home. Facing financial challenges, she initially considered purchasing a trailer. Yet, she soon realized that finding a spacious home within her budget was unfeasible. It was then that Bob, Ussery’s in-law and an air traffic controller, suggested a groundbreaking idea—living in a plane.
Intrigued, Ussery visited a disassembled Boeing 727 and fell in love immediately. The best part? The plane cost just $2,000, including shipping. Inspired by Donald Trump’s ownership of a private Boeing 727, Ussery named her new acquisition “Little Trump.”
With determination and creativity, Ussery set out to transform the plane into a unique and comfortable home. For less than $30,000 (approximately $60,000 today), she embarked on this significant project. Ensuring the plane’s stability during renovation was essential, so she strategically positioned it on her property with the nose facing a picturesque lake and the tail secured with concrete.
With the foundations laid, Ussery began the extensive task of refurbishing the interior. The 1,500-square-foot plane, with 76 windows, provided abundant natural light. She made critical modifications to the design, improving insulation, installing new flooring, and repurposing the plane’s bathroom and overhead bins for space-saving solutions. The result was a brilliantly designed living space that utilized every inch effectively.
A Unique Oasis of Comfort
Once the major renovations were complete, Ussery crafted a remarkable living environment. The plane now featured three bedrooms, a cozy living room, a fully functional kitchen, and a laundry facility. Ussery didn’t stop at the basics; she included unexpected luxuries like a phone and an oven. The crowning glory was the cockpit’s transformation into a magnificent master bathroom, complete with a soaking tub that offered stunning views. The layout was meticulously planned to create a sensation of floating on water.
What truly sets Ussery’s achievement apart is that she accomplished this extraordinary transformation single-handedly. From 1995 to 1999, she and her children lived aboard their converted plane, enjoying their unique home. Eventually, Ussery decided to share her creation with the world, converting it into a public museum. Tragically, during the process of moving the airplane a short distance, a mishap caused it to slip off the carriage and disintegrate.
Although Ussery’s Boeing 727 no longer soars through the skies, its legacy continues to inspire and captivate.
